Society of Sound: September

This September Bowers & Wilkins is celebrating the 100th Society of Sound release with a special record to mark the occasion - Passion, by Peter Gabriel.

Passion, an extension of the score that Peter had created for Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation Of Christ, was also the very first release for the newly formed Real World Records in June 1989.

Passion is a quietly persuasive record, with music that unpeels itself slowly, of unquantifiable depth and spirituality, music that matches the tension and power of the film itself.

Nearly 30 years after its release, Passion is now being made available to subscribers of Bower & Wilkins' Society of Sound as a high-resolution download, the first time it has been available in such sparkling definition.

ARMS is the seventh studio album from the trio, due for full commercial release on 14 October. Society of Sound members can enjoy an early preview of the album, available to download today (18 August).

The new album is the follow up to Bell X1's critically acclaimed album Chop Chop from 2013, which became their third number one album on the Irish Album Charts and their fourth consecutive album to be nominated for a Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year.

Produced by the band and recorded in Dublin and Donegal by Tommy McLoughlin (Villagers) and Glenn Keating (Jape), ARMS was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi) with Ross Dowling mixing the song Out of Love.

"The title ARMS is about the idea that, as the world feels like it's becoming a harsher place (maybe there's just more damn noise?)" says singer Paul Noonan. "We seek out the comfort of the familiar and familial… arms."

What a weekend: WOMAD 2016

What a fantastic WOMAD weekend that was! We had plenty of sunshine, delicious food and of course music from every corner of the globe.

If you can't wait to relive the weekend, take a look at the WOMAD Facebook page for photos and video highlights, or have a listen to the official Spotify playlist here.

We hope you had a chance to experience some of the Real World Records artists and music too. The Grit Orchestra kicked things off to a fantastic start on the Open Air Stage on Friday afternoon, with an incredible orchestral version of the late Martyn Bennett's album.

Sidestepper got everyone grooving on Saturday afternoon on the Siam Stage, with a great set featuring tracks from their latest album, Supernatural Love.

The Breath wowed the packed crowd at the Ecotricity Stage on Sunday night, with a beautiful performance of tracks from their debut album Carry Your Kin.

The Bowers & Wilkins Sound System 2016 was also a popular location throughout the weekend, with the 4-way, 135,000 Watt speaker system providing impressive sound quality for performances from Stuart McCallum, Hollie Stephenson, Dawn Penn, The Anchoress and more.

Hope to see you next year for WOMAD 2017!

Society of Sound: July

The Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound release for July comes from singer-songwriter Ben Taylor.

Though born into a musical world (his parents are James Taylor and Carly Simon) it wasn't really in Taylor's mind to become a singer until he was into his twenties. His first album release Famous Among the Barns was released in 2003 but it took until Another Run Around the Sun , in 2005, for Taylor to feel he'd started to create something which represented his true musical nature.

" My music is a huge amalgamation of things and influence and styles, but it's very much made up of music that my parents made that I heard growing up, it's ingrained in me. I have a hard time separating between the two."

The Another Run… album was co-produced by Kevin Bacon and Bacon is again the producer for this month's B&W release Naked. A live performance in a stripped back format.
