Real World: Film & TV out now...

image

The second release in our new series of digital compilations is Film & TV 1

Real World music has featured in many major movies and television programs - these are some of the highlights.

We’ve opened Series 1 of The Wire with The Blind Boys of Alabama’s version of ‘Way Down In The Hole’. We’ve played out over a mid-season finale of Grey’s Anatomy with Charlie Winston’s poignant 'She Went Quietly’. Joi’s 'Fingers’ was chosen to capture the cosmopolitan vibe of New York in Sex And The City. Very recently, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook’s 'Night Song’ featured in Kathryn Bigelow’s film Zero Dark Thirty. Ayub Ogada’s heart-breakingly lovely 'Kothbiro’ played over the closing credits of 2005’s The Constant Gardener, while Jocelyn Pook’s 'Dionysus’ had a powerful presence in Gangs of New York.

Dazzling UK Premiere for The Gloaming

The beautiful, vaulted, gothic space of Islington’s Union Chapel was the perfect atmospheric venue for the UK launch of The Gloaming, performing music from their forthcoming album to be released in October.

The uncomfortable term ‘supergroup’ can be disappointing, but Wednesday evening’s performance went beyond all expectations. Some of Ireland’s finest players - the legendary Martin Hayes, the young fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, sean-nos singer Iarla Ó Lionáird met American guitarist Dennis Cahill and New York contemporary classical pianist Thomas Bartlett in a truly unique collaboration.  The virtuosity, the energy, the unexpected arrangements and the sheer beauty of the music left the packed venue jumping to a standing ovation.

“Hearing Ó Lionaird’s wonderfully rich timbre filling every last corner of the Union Chapel was one of the musical highlights of the year”  (The Arts Desk)

“…it’s a truly dazzling show, where extraordinary musicianship meets with old Gaelic numbers … delivered with a contemporary twist.” (The Irish Post - 5 stars)

A Samuel Yirga short film for Channel 4's Random Acts

image

On a recent trip to Ethiopia, Mango Films had the chance to film a few Random Acts for Channel 4. Producer Christopher Pencakowski and director Henrique Goldman are both great fans of Samuel Yirga’s music and they where delighted to be able to collaborate with him on this episode.

The idea was simple. Get a piano in the middle of the busiest street in Addis Ababa and invite Samuel to play a spontaneous performance for the city.

On the first attempt the team faced a city-wide power cut and by the time a new location was found near a generator the beautiful evening light had faded.

image

Two days later they were ready to try again. Of all places the local bank agreed to hook up some power for the piano and speakers - such is the way thing go in swinging Addis. Finally, just after 3pm, with kids let out from school and the afternoon sun shining bright, Samuel began to play.

“This never happens in Addis” says Samuel, who has done similar spontaneous performances in London and elsewhere but never in his native Addis. “This is much different from an audience in an auditorium or club and I think it’s a bit scary, but when I get into the music I don’t think it will be”.

The crowd that grew around Samuel’s piano where totally mesmerized and delighted by his playing. People leaned out of bus windows and street vendors took time out of their day to take in the moment. It was a wonderful treat.

Samuel performed Ambassel In Box Revisited. The short film will air next Tues night/Weds morning at 00:05 (BST) on Channel 4.
