The beautiful, vaulted, gothic space of Islington’s Union Chapel was the perfect atmospheric venue for the UK launch of The Gloaming, performing music from their forthcoming album to be released in October.
The uncomfortable term ‘supergroup’ can be disappointing, but Wednesday evening’s performance went beyond all expectations. Some of Ireland’s finest players - the legendary Martin Hayes, the young fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, sean-nos singer Iarla Ó Lionáird met American guitarist Dennis Cahill and New York contemporary classical pianist Thomas Bartlett in a truly unique collaboration. The virtuosity, the energy, the unexpected arrangements and the sheer beauty of the music left the packed venue jumping to a standing ovation.
“Hearing Ó Lionaird’s wonderfully rich timbre filling every last corner of the Union Chapel was one of the musical highlights of the year” (The Arts Desk)
“…it’s a truly dazzling show, where extraordinary musicianship meets with old Gaelic numbers … delivered with a contemporary twist.” (The Irish Post - 5 stars)
