CBC Music talks to Thomas Mapfumo 'The Lion of Zimbabwe'

CBC World Music continue their weekly series with an interview with Thomas Maptumo, Zimbabwe’s greatest living musician, in a minor key.

“Depending on the source, Thomas Mapfumo is either a folk hero making music for the people of his beloved Zimbabwe or a coward who criticizes from afar. However, there’s no disputing the power of his Chimurenga music. It’s a phrase Mapfumo coined from the Shona word “struggle,” and speaks to the challenges of the poorest Zimbabweans under the repressive brutality of their president, Robert Mugabe, in power since 1987.”

Portico album makes Crack Magazine's number 3 of 2012

Influential taste-makers Crack Magazine rate Portico Quartet’s album at number 3 in their top 100 of the year.

“Jazz-techno anyone? If there was a glorious success in changing direction this year, the stars of Crack’s third birthday bash were your men. Self-titled, self-assured and layered with swathes of sonic experimentation it stood out a mile. Less focused on the hang-drum that defined previous releases, the minimal sparse approach and killer production quality left an indelible mark on our listening. The most contemporary record of the year if not the most intricate the electronic change of direction heralded infinite new possibilities for one of the UK’s most distinctive acts”. (Thomas Frost in Crack Magazine)

In the third part the Real World Gold series, the 82-year talks to CBC from his hotel room, while on tour with The Blind Boys.

Joseph Arthur Talks To CBC About His Time With Real World

CBC Music continue their series on the stories behind Real World Records, with an interview with American singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur.

“It sounds like one of those urban myths, except in this case, it’s true: Joseph Arthur was just 25 years old when Peter Gabriel happened upon his demo and signed him to Real World Records. Arthur launched a solo, folk-driven career that has kept him happily on the fringe of mainstream success, until a few months ago when he joined forces with Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament and started the rock band RNDM.”

CBC online celebrates Real World Gold with a new six-part series

CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, have been looking into the stories behind Real World Gold. Interviewing some of our artists has inspired them to put together this new series, which launches with an interview with Sheila Chandra.

“We’re proud to kick things off with this deeply personal interview with Sheila Chandra, one of Real World’s biggest stars, thanks to her phenomenal voice. The reissuing of Chandra’s two albums, Moonsung: A Real World Retrospective and Weaving My Ancestors’ Voices, is the closest you’ll come to hearing anything “new” from the 47-year-old London-based artist for the foreseeable future. That’s because a rare neurological condition rendered her mute years ago. In a candid email interview, Chandra wrote about being a singer without a voice, her experiences with Peter Gabriel and Real World, and the role music plays in her life now.”
