Hues of the Blues - Globally

Two key Real World releases are listed in the Chicago Sun Times' list of Top Ten Blues albums for 2004: Little Axe "Champagne and Grits" and Charlie Musselwhite's "Sanctuary":

Little Axe, "Champagne & Grits" (Real World): Think mixing blues with hip-hop would make you as sick as, say, champagne and grits? Well, Chris Thomas King proved it can be done successfully, and Grandmaster Flash alum Skip McDonald and his musical partners perfect the recipe here.

Charlie Musselwhite, "Sanctuary" (Real World): Even a boring Midwestern interstate feels like Highway 61 outside of Clarksdale, Miss., when you slip this harmonica great's finest album onto the car player. The indefatigable spirit of the American people is the one constant theme here.

In the same article:

Finally, blues artist of the year honors go to Charlie Musselwhite, for the towering achievement that was "Sanctuary" as well as career achievement.

Iarla O'Lionaird Contributes to Auroral Synapse

'Auroral Synapse' by Anna Hill is a lavish art publication of a photographic journey through Finnish Lapland photographing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). The book contains a CD of the soundtrack from the installation including field recordings made in Lapland by the artist and a song composed by Real World singer Iarla O'Lionaird. The expedition lead to Anna Hill's BAFTA nominated interactive installation which was first seen at the 2003 Kilkenny Arts Festival.
The publication will be launched on Thursday 2 December at 5.30pm at the Imagenow Gallery at New Bride Street, Dublin 8 by Paul Johnson of the Arts Concil of Ireland.
Robert Monroe in his introductory essay for the book explains " The Northern Lights occur when ions streaming from the sun, in what is called 'the solar wind' are drawn down by the earth's magnetic field and collide with ionospheric gases, causing the particles to glow. Hill's work not only registers these powerful collisions, but is itself a luminous product of meeting between different elements".
