Iarla O'Lionaird Contributes to Auroral Synapse

'Auroral Synapse' by Anna Hill is a lavish art publication of a photographic journey through Finnish Lapland photographing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). The book contains a CD of the soundtrack from the installation including field recordings made in Lapland by the artist and a song composed by Real World singer Iarla O'Lionaird. The expedition lead to Anna Hill's BAFTA nominated interactive installation which was first seen at the 2003 Kilkenny Arts Festival.
The publication will be launched on Thursday 2 December at 5.30pm at the Imagenow Gallery at New Bride Street, Dublin 8 by Paul Johnson of the Arts Concil of Ireland.
Robert Monroe in his introductory essay for the book explains " The Northern Lights occur when ions streaming from the sun, in what is called 'the solar wind' are drawn down by the earth's magnetic field and collide with ionospheric gases, causing the particles to glow. Hill's work not only registers these powerful collisions, but is itself a luminous product of meeting between different elements".

Two Magical Gospel Albums at Special Christmas Price!

Buy Spirit of The Century and Go Tell It On The Mountain together from £20 (delivered in the UK).
We're bundling these two fantastic Blind Boys of Alabama CDs together to bring you some of the best Gospel music around.
"Spirit of the Century", is a stunning blend of classic gospel tunes and contemporary secular music, all reinterpreted in The Blind Boys' unique and passionate style.
With the festive season approaching what better time to pick up "Go Tell It On The Mountain" the CD Entertainment Weekly described as Jesus Choice "What Christmas album would Jesus listen to? Believers and non-might concur that this year, it'd be the Blind Boys of Alabama's Go Tell It On The Mountain (Real World). Guest stars either counter the Boy's gospel grizzledness (Chrissie Hynde, Shelby Lynne) or sound similarly septuagenarian (Tom Waits, George Clinton), with players like John Medeski turning up the spiritual-blues simmer." Now established as one of the legendary holiday albums of the decade!

Blind Boys Holiday Special on PBS for Viewers in the USA

The initial release of Go Tell It on the Mountain was followed by a tour which included special guests who sang or performed on the CD. In December 2003, a special holiday concert was held at the historic Beacon Theater in New York City, along with vocal guests Aaron Neville, Chrissie Hynde, Mavis Staples and Michael Franti, as well as musical guests Robert Randolph, Charlie Musselwhite, Duke Robilliard, and ace keyboard player John Medeski. PBS filmed that show and it will be presented as a Holiday special entitled BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - GO TELL IT ON THE MOUN TAIN as part of their December 2004 pledge drive (check local listings). The program will air nationally between Dec. 4- 14. The program features a mix of gospel standards, such as "Down By The Riverside" and "Amazing Grace," as well as holiday songs chosen in collaboration with the guests. Mavis Staples joins us on "Born in Bethlehem," a song she learned as a child; Chrissie Hynde performs "In the Bleak Midwinter," a traditional English Christmas song; and Aaron Neville sings "Joy to the World." There's also the holiday classic "Little Drummer Boy," with spoken word by Michael Franti. You will be able to purchase a DVD copy of the concert with your pledge to PBS.
