Society of Sound: February

The Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound release for February is an exclusive preview of new music from electronic-pop pioneers Heaven 17.

Not For Public Broadcast is a 'work-in-progress' version of the group's new album that exposes the process of how Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory are making the record.

"We wanted to show partially-finished versions and to be honest about how things are created. It's still skeletal in a lot of ways, it's still open to change and it's not mastered."

This Society of Sound release is the only way to get these new songs in a digital form.

New album by Les Amazones d'Afrique

Les Amazones d'Afrique, a newly-formed collective of west African musicians campaigning for gender equality, will release a new LP on Real World Records called République Amazone on 10 March 2017.

The album will feature contributions from Angélique Kidjo, Kandia Kouyaté, Mamani Keita, Mariam Doumbia, Mariam Koné, Massan Coulibaly, Mouneissa Tandina, Nneka, Pamela Badjogo and Rokia Koné.

République Amazone is the sound of the diaspora of African music returning home, a reclaiming outside of genre and time. As much at home on the dancefloors of east London, or as part of an Awesome Tapes from Africa festival set in Croatia, as it would be ringing out of a cement brick house in Bamako, it showcases the sparkling range and versatility of its songstresses.

The album will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally (via iTunes).

Listen to 'I Play The Kora', featuring all of the vocalists mentioned above:

Aurelio's 'Darandi' is out today

Recorded live at Real World Studios, Aurelio's new album, Darandi is released today.

Darandi is a collection of Aurelio's favourite songs from his career recorded to capture the sound of his incendiary live performances. Accompanied by some of the Garifuna world's brightest musical talents, pairing upbeat, dynamic rhythms with melancholy, heartfelt melodies, this music is both deep and danceable.

"Aurelio Martinez has become the leading Garifuna performer, and this is his best album to date" ★★★★ The Guardian

"Upbeat and engaging, like the man himself, and backed by Guayo Cedeño's vibrato-rich electric guitar, this album should bring more attention to an under-valued stream of Afro-Latin music. Welcome in that Caribbean sunshine!" ★★★★ The Irish Times

Society of Sound: January

Wandering Heart is the January release on Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound by unique singer-songwriter Brooke Sharkey.

After a colourful and drifting upbringing between France and England, Brooke has developed an intense narrative style. Her songs challenge the boundaries of love; tell stories of personal encounters and reflect on the places the last two years have taken her both physically and emotionally.

Brooke takes her musical influences from old French music, folk and contemporary pop/rock. The songs on Wandering Heart were written about London life and summers travelling along the coasts of France and Italy with long term collaborator Adam Beattie who plays guitar in Brooke's band but who is also a singer/songwriter in his own right.

A vocal style that switches effortlessly between lithely melodic and fiery, set against a deeply atmospheric musical backdrop, have led to comparisons with the likes of Kate Bush, Ane Brun and Cat Power.

Brooke and her band play London's Bush Hall on Friday 27 January.

Real World Artists Live

What is 2017 going to be like we're all asking ourselves? Well, for starters it's full of Real World Records artists playing live in January, February and March. Not a bad start, we say...

Fresh from celebrating the release of their Repeater album, Spiro are back on the road for dates starting on 17 January in Cardiff.

Aurelio kicks-off his Darandi World Tour in earnest in January too, playing songs that feature on the Darandi album, released later in the month, which celebrates his 30 years at the heart of Garifuna music. A consummate live performer these shows are not to be missed.

The Breath's Winter Tour re-boots also in January with two London shows at Echoes and more dates being added.

9Bach continue to support their Anian album with their first live dates of 2017 starting at London's King's Place in February. The band are also currently nominated for a Songlines Award. You can vote for them here!:

Unbelievably, it is almost a year since The Gloaming released their critically lauded second album 2, but they're starting this new year at full throttle nonetheless, with a staggering seven sold-out nights in Dublin and dates in Europe and the USA throughout February, March and April.

We hope you can catch up with one of these shows and help kick-start your 2017 in style.

Congo Beat The Drum film

Congo Beat The Drum is a film following two musicians from Tel Aviv who travel to Jamaica to record an album with forgotten reggae artists from the past.

The film follows Kalbata (Ariel Tagar) and Mixmonster (Uri Wertheim), from their basement studio in Tel Aviv, all the way to the Kingston ghettos, looking for their favourite singers of days gone by.

In Jamaica, they encounter a strange, often challenging culture while trying to achieve their goal. A unique musical journey into the forgotten corners of reggae of the seventies and eighties, and a rare glimpse into the smoky, dusty world of Rub-a-Dub and its past champions.

Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali Group tour

Torchbearers of the Qawwali tradition, the Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali Group from Pakistan, will tour the UK in March 2017.

Rizwan and Muazzam have been performing together since the 1990s. Their incredible performances at festivals around the world, including WOMAD UK, are rare and transcendent experiences and have seen them develop a devoted worldwide following.

Performing songs that use hypnotic vocal repetition to induce a state of ecstasy, the brothers' soaring voices are backed by a gharana, an ensemble of harmonium and tabla accompanied by rhythmic handclaps.

The legacy of qawwali, a form of devotional music popular in South Asia, was brought to an international audience by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and that legacy has now passed to his nephews, Rizwan and Muazzam, exceptional singers who carry on the Sufi tradition of musical devotion and exaltation.
