Track of the Day: ‘Titania’s Lullaby’ by Will Gregory

Titania’s Lullaby is the second track to be released from Will Gregory’s forthcoming album Lost In The Forest: Music from the RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Titania’s Lullaby is available to stream and download now and the album follows on 8 August, 2025.

In contrast to the aggressive, pulsing electronics of first single Threatening Bass, Titania’s Lullaby shows a different side to the forthcoming album with a distinct mood shift, but one that still retains the hint of a darker underbelly; “It’s a lullaby,” says Gregory “the fairies gather round and are trying to lull Titania into a restful state and they sing ‘Lula Lula Lullaby’. The song had to be something that you imagine you might sing to a child going to sleep or have that flavour. It comes back again, towards the end of Act One, where Bottom is now a donkey and Titania has fallen completely in love with him because of Oberon’s magic spell and they go off together to have ‘relations.’ It’s obviously not completely restful, shall we say, what’s being done to them both.”

The track features vocals from Katherine Pearce, who played Puck in the London production; “I was lucky enough to work with Katherine previously on the RSC production of King John in 2019 and she has a stunning voice. It’s wonderful to work with performers that can both act and sing brilliantly. Delivering music in the middle of a play helps develop a character and enliven the whole theatricality of the show.”

Will Gregory talks synths and Shakespeare

Will Gregory is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer and one half of the electro-pop duo Goldfrapp. He is also the founding member of Will Gregory’s Moog Ensemble, who last year released their debut album Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project. Lost In The Forest: Music from the RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the music Gregory created for the RSC’s production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which originally premiered in Stratford and then transferred to London, in late 2024, for a sold-out, five-star run at the Barbican.

Director Eleanor Rhode showed Gregory early set designs, with plans to make the fairies exist as light sources or light beams; ethereal, neon and a bit disconnected… This visual approach gave Gregory “a kind-of carte blanche to think about using synths and electronic sounds. We were on a pathway to using synths and making some sounds that reflected this tingling, fleeting electricity.”

“I’ve always liked music in theatre or film where the music is strong enough to stand on its own two legs. Some of the time you’re doing a mood that is very much in the background and, here, we’ve got dialogue… We’ve got Shakespeare! You don’t want to trample all over that, obviously.  It’s always great when you can get the music to run in parallel rather than completely underscoring what’s happening on stage. And sometimes Eleanor would put it somewhere I hadn’t imagined which was fantastic.”

‘Titania’s Lullaby’ and ‘Threatening Bass’ are available now on all digital platforms with Lost In The Forest released on 8 August, 2025.
