The West African feminist musical collective Les Amazones d’Afrique have just announced that they will perform on the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. It is the final date to be announced of their forthcoming UK tour in June. The Glastonbury show sees the band share a stage with internationally-renowned headline acts Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney.
Earlier in June, Les Amazones d’Afrique will also perform on the main stage at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, as well as releasing their first live EP (10 June), which was recorded at the launch party of their second album at Real World Studios.
In June, Les Amazones d’Afrique will tour the UK for the first time since 2018, with shows in Glasgow, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and London. During this tour, they will introduce their newest member, the GRAMMY-winning Ivorian singer Dobet Gnahoré.
“I have joined Les Amazones d’Afrique to continue the fight for the emancipation of women in Africa and in the world.” says Dobet. “The fight of Les Amazones d’Afrique is the fight of all women, and especially us female artists. We are visible and have to make the new generation aware of how to make good choices in their lives. I am with Les Amazones because I am an African and my duty is to be there to continue the fight.”
Les Amazones d’Afrique’s debut album République Amazone featured guest contributions from the likes of Angélique Kidjo and Nigerian singer-songwriter Nneka, and caught the attention of President Obama, who included one of the songs in his 20 favourite tracks of 2017. In 2020, they released their follow-up album Amazones Power, on which familiar voices like Mamani Keïta and Rokia Koné appear alongside a younger generation of singers who represent the exciting new sound of modern Africa.
