Opus 1

Pan African Orchestra, 1995

Out of Accra, Ghana, comes a new and ambitious expression of modern Africa using the sanza, the drum, the flute and strings of many African cultures as compositional tools. A unique synthesis of new music.

The Pan African Orchestra’s creator and director, Danso Abiam, describes the orchestra’s repertoire as “re-composed” by which he means traditional themes collected at village level, reworked and expanded into neo-classical pieces, in some cases of symphonic length. This album is a selection of the most popular pieces shortened from full concert length.
