Hannah Peel releases Saccharine Soundtrack on Real World X
Fri, 24 July 26
Clara Serra López is a Spanish born vocalist, composer, songwriter and keys player based in London with Catalan and Cuban heritage. López’s two Lengua Materna EPs (Part I & II) now combine, along with three new songs, to make up the debut album, Lengua Materna, which is out now on Real World X.
The full album examines how culture and politics shape our emotional responses, and how colonial and patriarchal lenses influence the way we see the world. It asks how we might find the humanity in those we disagree with, creating space for greater empathy and communication. Alongside this, Clara reflects on the deliberate work and necessity of friendship and family, and the curing power these relationships can bring to our lives
Lengua Materna (Mother Tongue) is composed by Clara Serra López and co-produced with Jake Long (Maisha, Gary Bartz, Snapped Ankles). Having worked closely together for several years, the duo has developed a shared musical language. Jake’s expertise in modular synthesis, electronic production and intricate rhythms provides an adventurous and innovative framework for Clara’s compositions.
In support of the album release Clara will play a special album launch show at Total Refreshment Centre in London on Monday, 26 October. Tickets are available now >> HERE
Mixed by a combination of Jake Long and Oli Barton-Wood (Ezra Collective, Zawose Queens, Jordan Rakei…) Lengua Materna is a unique musical experience that intertwines Clara’s Mediterranean heritage with her jazz background and passion for electronic soundscapes. A deeply personal sonic narrative that sits alongside a societal commentary through critical observation and lived experience, which has gained plaudits and support from the likes of Jamz Supernova, Gilles Peterson, Soweto Kinch, Tim Garcia… alongside airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 3, Soho Radio and Representz Radio.
With the release of the album, comes three new songs, Espejos, Súmate and Oigo Los Gritos (I hear the cries). Oigo Los Gritos was written as a response to the far-right, anti-immigration riots that broke out in the summer of 2024. The rage bubbling in these circles, which ultimately led to this moment, had been nurtured by media outlets and political elites, normalising the dehumanisation of those they deem ‘not one of us.’
“To witness all this hate at a time when we’re all being robbed of a sense of self, community and future seemed like such a waste of anger that is valid, but wrongly allocated,” says López. “These lyrics hold both frustration and a desire to understand those who have been brainwashed into thinking that an immigrant, refugee or asylum seeker is the reason why they can’t afford rent or find a job.”
“Unless you are part of the ruling elite, we all share the same adversaries: the greedy few who hold the strings of our entire existence. When you actually have conversations with many of those we have deemed as ‘just a racist or a fascist’, you can witness their vulnerabilities and hopes for a dignified life, a life that was promised by their nation and never given. Their love for the mother country, for an identity built on years of colonisation and empire, is just a façade to make them feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves, that they have a purpose beyond their lack of current self-worth.”
