First acts announced for WOMAD Chile 2019

The first artists have been announced for next year's WOMAD Chile Festival. The event will take place between the 15th and 17th of February 2019 at Plaza la Paz, Recoleta.

WOMAD Chile is now in its fifth year, and the first line-up announcement includes artists from the Brazilian music scene as well as a diverse mix of music from around the world. The internationally renowned Capeverdean Lura will bring her popular blend of funaná and batuque music to the festival, alongside the Dominican Xiomara Fortuna, feminist, jazzist and known in her country as ‘La Reina de la Fusión’. Also on the bill is Dubioza Kolektiv, a band from Bosnia and Herzegovina whose music passes from the folklore of that country fused with reggae, hip-hop, and ska. Other international names include Los De Abajo, who released their album LDA v The Lunatics on Real World Records in 2005, Afrotronix (Chad), Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (Italy), DJ Metisse (Madagascar/France), Kosta Kostov (Bulgaria), and DJ Dolores (Brazil).

From Chile, the country’s most most listened to band on Spotify, Santa Feria, will perform at the festival, along with newcomers, Apokalipo.

In 2018, the festival attracted 50,000 people. Daniel Jadue, Mayor of Recoleta and host of the international event, said: “We are happy to organize again the WOMAD Chile festival. Whilst today there are those who intend to close the borders, from Recoleta we open spaces for multicultural encounters. It will be three days of a wonderful party full of colours, flavours, dance and music from different countries and cultures.

Giorgio Varas, Director of WOMAD Chile, explained: “Our search for sounds and bands happens all year round in different parts of the planet, to bring them to the stages of La Paz, La Union, First Nations and the Park to meet with an audience that increasingly adheres to multiculturalism. On January 8th, we will announce the rest of the line up and more than 40 parallel activities for the family.

You can check the complete line up and purchase tickets on the festival website.
